The Best Free Albums of 2009

Every single one of these albums have been provided free for download by the artists. All descriptions are from Last.fm, or from the artist.

Conelrad : Sure is the Risk Made

Conelrad has been recording and releasing online since about 2000. Function Creep, his first LP, was made available for the first time in 2007. Conelrad’s second full-length album was made available online on 16 August 2009, and is entitled Sure is the Risk Made. All Conelrad’s music is free to download at http://www.munchhouse.com/conelrad/.

Conelrad does not charge anything for his music, which has always been DRM free, and he encourages as much distribution of it as possible.

"Like Function Creep, it is full of ambient sounds, textures, and beats, and some songs have some vocoded vocals too. But unlike Function Creep, it is very much more driving and diverse; there is a greater variety of sound this time around, including both some of the most accessible/"poppy" and the most vicious stuff I've ever done. But I think it has a pretty wide appeal, and I'd love for you to check it out and let me know what you think."

Fear of Tigers : Cossus Snufsigalonica

Fear of Tigers is a electronic band from London, United Kingdom formed by Benjamin Berry. Benjamin has made some original tracks as well as remixes that are available for download. Also he take part on some live session with artist like Edwin Van Cleef and colaborate with Valerie Colective. In winter 2009 he released his first album “Cossus Snufsigalonica” that is totally free for download at his MySpace.

ad-ver-sary : A Bright Cut Across Velvet Sky

Hailing from the Canadian electronic underground, Ad·ver·sary is Jairus Khan. His remixes of Converter and Iszoloscope have enjoyed heavy club and airplay around the world, and he has provided North American tour support for Terrorfakt, Antigen Shift, Cyanotic, Adam X, and others. Fusing a variety of percussive styles with thick and organic soundscapes, Ad·ver·sary’s sound is described by ReGen Magazine as “a balance between the brutal and the beautiful,” and spans many genres (including ambient, rhythmic noise, aggro-industrial, and hard techno) as the music’s focus is not an aesthetic, but a subject: conflict and power.

Robot Science : Doodads

What does Robot Science sound like?
"It's hard to say, my influences are all over the place. Think M83/The Album Leaf + Chiptunes + beepboopbeepboop. I wouldn't call my music chiptunes, although there's definitely some chiptune-y sounds interspersed. The mood I was trying to evoke was nostalgia and childhood. I tried really hard to keep it chill, but not boring/too ambient/repetitive. People say my music is good music to do homework/chill-out to.

Some bands that influenced my songs: M83, The Album Leaf, Minus the Bear, The Depreciation Guild, The Postal Service."

You can listen to and download all of the songs on this album here.

Swimmingpool the Band : Punching Against the Breeze

"This is probably my most scattershot record to date. I'm utilizing more instruments than I had in the past. On this record I've introduced Thumb Harps, The Autoharp, Clarinet, Violin, Marimbas, along with all of the regular instruments (guitar, bass, piano, drums).

As for the sound of the record, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to pin down what genre I'm playing. Many of the songs retain the familiar ambient sound that those who read my previous posts have grown used to (Often Compared to Stars Of The Lid, Brian Eno, Boards Of Canada & Tim Hecker, the words of other people, not me, though it makes me happy)."
